Garden Landscaping Tips

Tips For Your Landscape

Plans save you money, and they can detect problems before works have been commenced, resulting in possible costly reconstruction. The landscape designer will sort through your ideas, and with their expertise, will place them in a coherent and economical way to make the most of your space. With a plan to quote from, a landscaper can provide exact rates from precise quantities

Watering your Plants

Roots grow towards moisture and although surface watering may be therapeutic, it damages plants. If the roots have grown towards the surface, where the soil is hotter they’re more prone to drought. Instead try watering plants deeply to a depth of 30cm. Watering deeply into the ground, draws the roots further down into the cool soil, anchoring roots firmly and developing good plants. If you use a watering system, use a water timer to accurately measure how long the tap is on.

If you have an existing large tree in your garden and you want to redesign, firstly assess the health, vigour and form of existing trees. A tree can take generations to establish and a mature one is an asset to any garden. Unfortunately they can also be a challenge to a garden, casting heavy shade, competing for water and nutrients and dictating the layout. Seek the help of a professional arborist. They’ll advise you about pruning and maintenance, about protecting the roots of the trees during the work. Also if you want to remove a large tree like this, check with your local council to see if you need a permit.

Retaining Walls

If you have a sloping block, or an area that is unusable because of the slope, a retaining wall can be constructed to keep back the soil and create a usable lawn, paved or garden area. It is important to remember that the pressure created by soil and water behind the wall can determine the type and size of wall that you should construct and how long it will last. Before deciding on the type of retaining wall to build, a number of issues need to be considered. The first is the height of the wall; an engineered design is required for walls over 1.0 metre. Make sure that your landscaper meets requirements for any extra reinforcing or drainage required in the construction of the wall. Once the wall is built choose your plants carefully as some plants can cause the wall to lean prematurely.
